If you struggle with web content writing or you are new to writing online copy then below are some top tips for how to create effective web copywriting.
- Web content should be written in short sentences and short paragraphs, with one key point per paragraph. Web copy should be concise and to the point as many people skim read online and don’t have time to take in too many details.
- Always use the word ‘you’ rather than ‘we’ so that your copy is focused on your potential customers. This will help them understand what’s in it for them if they buy your product or service.
- Use bullet points, headings and subheadings in your web content writing to break up the copy so it’s easy for website visitors to read and take in.
- Replace industry jargon or abbreviations with simple expressions and words which your website visitors will understand.
- Always back a feature of your product or service up with a benefit. Ask yourself the question ‘so what?’ after every feature to ensure you explain the associated benefit.
- When writing headlines, make sure they are straightforward and easy to understand. Obscure or overly clever headlines will add nothing to your message and may mislead, confuse or completely disinterest visitors.
- Include a call to action on every page of your website. Make sure your visitors know how they can contact you or buy a product for example. Failing to make this information clear frustrate potential customers and encourage them to click away from your website.
- If you sell a product or service which is the same or similar to other companies then make sure you tell visitors what differentiates you from your competitors.
- Bad spelling and grammar makes your company look unprofessional so ask someone with experience in proofreading to check your copy before its uploaded.
